Holy Spinnaker Batman - my rating is 254  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

My Base rating is 218, which seems to be the new base rating for a Catalina 27. Fair enough, I guess... But by prop, my cruising chute, etc. all add up to an "as sailed" rating of 254.

Which is, like slower than a Cal 25. Slower than a Columbia 26. Ye Gods, it's slower than a Mac 26! (not as slow as a 26X, though).

So I have mixed feelings. Considering the number of Catalina 27's I've passed (all of them! Wink ), I should do really well racing. OTOH, I have absolutely NO bragging rights - I have to hide my head in shame to admit that, at least on paper, I'm slower than a Mac...

I guess we'll see when I start racing her. First race is Jack&Jill in April...

That PHRF sounds a bit slow.  I don't race, except it is always an informal race when two sailboats are going in the same direction, but like you can almost always go faster the the popular CAT 27.  My CAL 2-25 is reported to have a PHRF of 210.  My LWL is 22' 0", hull speed of 6.5 kts, displacement to LWL of 205, sail area to displacement of 18.4 and a book sail area of 314 ft sq.  I don't know your LWL but I think the Crown 28 is very similar if not the same as a CAL 2-27 that has a LWL of 22' 1" or it may be the same as a CAL 29.  I think you have about the same LWL, larger displacemnt and more sail area.  I would expect your Crown to be a bit faster than my CAL 2-25.  Here is info on the CAL 2-27:
http://pages.sssnet.com/go2erie/cal227.htm
A friend had a Crown 28 for many years.  Great West Coast sailboat but I can't find any dimentional info on them.

Yeah - info on Crowns is hard to find. I have them somewhere, and iirc they're almost identical to a Cal 2-27 (although it looks closer to a Cal 29). I think the dimensions are on the Crown website: www.bcboatnet.org/Crown

And yeah, I do seem to pass a lot of boats. I guess we'll see at the Jack&Jill Race in April...

Hey Captn Found this on another site you might have some fun with these.

Tiddly Cove Yacht Club (TCYC) is Vancouver's fun and affordable sail-oriented yacht club.

The club has recently finalized our 2010 race schedule, and we are looking forward to a great year of racing with several new boats competing.

Here's the races that are coming up in 2010:
• Spring Tune Up, March 13,
• Sail Past – Sat May 8
• Passage Island Race – Sat May 15
• Summer Shorts; 18:00 hrs June 24, July 8, 15, 22, 29 & Aug 5th
• Summer Solstice – June 19th & 20
• English Bay Scramble – August 14
• Last Chance Regatta – Oct 16th

There are also races for the Cal 20 one design fleet:
• Janet Stamper Cal 20 Series, March 14 & 28, April 11 & 25 & May 9
• June 26 & 27, Cal 20 Nationals

Non-member boats are welcomed and encouraged to participate in Tiddly Cove races -- we offer an encouraging atmosphere and low race fees (note that the English Bay Scramble is a VARC race with regular VARC entry fees). Need help getting into the racing scene? Visit the TCYC site, contact the Fleet Captain, and we'll get you the information you need to go play on the course.

For TCYC members, the day races also count towards Fleet Champion Boat and Fleet Champion Sailor awards -- well worth the annual membership fee just for the awesome plaques you can win!!!

For more information, see the TCYC web site at www.tiddlycove.bc.ca

The next race is the March 13 Spring Tuneup. See you on the water!

Thanks John!

I almost joined the TCYC, but was intimidated by their stellar racing reputation. And I keep saying I'm NOT into serious racing...

That said, TCYC does have a few races I'm interested in. The English Bay Scramble looks like a HOOT! Cheesy

It's funny that you think TCYC has a stellar racing reputation - in the VARC community they are perceived as dilettante cruisers.  That said, some excellent racers are members of TCYC.  Their Thursday night races (Summer Shorts) are a very casual enjoyable affair, much more fun and less hard-core than the Wednesday night stuff.

I'm surprised you got such a large rating.  I have the original owner's manual on Aruba - I'll dig out the specs and perhaps you can get a more realistic rating.  Ferpetesakes, I routinely pass Cat 27s and 30s with my #2 jib up (the family sail).

That said, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.  With a rating like that you have a huge advantage over most other boats, and may well win a lot of races.

Off topic - I'd love to have a look at your cruising kite.  Aruba has never flown a kite, and it's about time she gets one.

I have the original owners' manual and documentation from when Aruba was built (77), one of these days I'll scan and post it all.

That would be EXCELLENT! Cheesy With your permission, I'd like to post it on the Crown website ( http://www.bcboatnet.org/Crown ) I'm afraid I've been neglecting it a bit, but if there's any interest, I'll fix it up some.

Thanks! Smiley

I posted a play-by-play in the Saltwater forum - short verion: If I had started on time, I woulda beat the next two boats in front of me (They beat me across the line by less than 2 min). I thought briefly of doing the Summer Solsace overnighter, but I don't know anyone I would trust giving the helm to while I went to sleep. Maybe next year...

And the English Bay Scramble for sure! Cheesy

And I did notice the first 3 boats "30ft and under" across the line were Olsen 30s Wink
